During printing, a ribbon, which has ink coated onto a thin polyester film, and the substrate to be printed pass under the print head. Developments have been made in special ceramic inks and a cutting edge cover-coated paper. The print head consists of a row of tiny heated points, which melt the thermoplastic ink and allow it to transfer from the ribbon to the substrate forming a decal. The transfer is then soaked in water, applied in reverse and fired in the same way as a conventional waterslide. This is in addition to silkscreen processes. The system is not intended to replace existing transfers, but is ideal for short specialised production runs and mass customisation where current transfer systems are uneconomic. The advantage of Thermal transfer printing is that it is a flexible, digital, low cost technology that utilises existing application and firing techniques. Ribbons are already available in black, simulated gold, sepia and blue-grey. Further custom colours can be developed subject to a substantial minimum order. The colour range available is resistant to both alkali and acid attack in much the same way as existing colours.
